WHAT? How does that make sense? Let me break it down for you in terms of my cable bill. I currently have time Warner Cable with HD shows, extra channels and DVR. For all of that I pay $60 bucks a month, roughly. That equals to about $720 a year not including the UFC fights I order and some of the movies like The Hangover. With Hulu Plus all this is going to change. For a small price of $10 a month, or $120 a year, you get access to Hulu on the PS3, 360(eventually), the iPhone, and the iPad. The PC already has Hulu and Hulu Plus since that was the number one source for Hulu in the first place.
Originally it was announced that you would need Playstation Plus to play Hulu Plus. Those reports were later denied but they did say that if you have the PS Plus you can get early access to Hulu Plus. The 360 won’t be getting this service until early next year and I don’t see the Wii getting Hulu at all until they get a new console out.
This is big news for everyone who uses their console as a media center. Most gamers/media enthusiasts use PlayOn with a combo of TVersity for Hulu on the Xbox or PS3. As for PC people if they didn’t want to watch on their monitor all it took was hooking your tower to your HDTV, if you have one, and streaming it this way. The arrival of Hulu on the consoles is going to be a big blow to established companies. This can make or break the way people get their content.
With the 360 people have the video marketplace and Zune to get movies, TV shows and music. Now that they are getting Hulu early next year it all but cements the 360 as a viable media center…even more so than before. Zune will be the place for movies while Hulu will be your one stop shop for new episodes of practically any show. The PS3 also gets creditability but I like the 360’s interface and marketplace a lot more then the PS3’s. One thing is for sure that if you hate paying for crappy cable (like me) then this is a sure thing to get added.
While most people will look towards this as a bad thing (Hulu not being free) it is optional. You don’t have to pay for Hulu Plus. You can pay the one-time fee for PlayOn which is $40 and then use Tversity. Most people will probably still use this option but I figured if I can save myself 600 dollars why not.
The con of not having live cable from a company is the loss of seeing sporting events and live broadcasts of certain events. While I can say personally that I won’t be watching any Miami heat games this year until they play the Cavs this doesn’t bother me as much. I won’t get to see my Browns play but I am hoping that with the ESPN partnership they will be adding live streams of games.
One thing is for certain with all of this; the Xbox and PS3 are starting to be more and more valuable as an all around media center…now if only we can get the 360 to support Blu-Rays…
